Introduction 

On September 15th, 2023, a tribute to H.E. The President of The Portuguese Republic  held a remarkable event showcasing the strength of international diplomacy and corporate collaboration at The National Club, Toronto, Canada. The President of The Portuguese Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, and members of the Portuguese Delegation, Secretary of State for Portuguese Communities Paulo Cafôfo, City Councillor Ana Bailao, Portuguese Ambassador to Canada Antonio Leao Rocha, attended this epic event and state visit, organized by the Portugal Diaspora Council in Canada. 

A Diplomatic Milestone 

Within the scope of its mission and purpose, the Portuguese Diaspora Council seeks to support bilateral relations and the development of economic, commercial and cultural ties between these two countries.  

To commemorate the 70th anniversary of the entrance of the first sizable wave of Portuguese immigrants, Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa met with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. 

One of the main activities developed to support this mission is the realization of high-level institutional events where, among others, business relations, contacts and quality networking with the most relevant and prominent personalities of the political, business and cultural life between Portugal and Canada.

The Prime Minister and the President restated their opposition to Russia’s unlawful aggression against Ukraine and their shared resolve to support Ukraine through whatever it takes. 

President Rebelo de Sousa received a thank you from Prime Minister Trudeau for Portugal’s assistance in helping Canada fight this summer’s wildfires. The leaders focused on ways that Canada and Portugal might cooperate to safeguard the environment and boost the development of clean energy as they spoke about the significance of ongoing bilateral cooperation to combat the effects of climate change. 

The two leaders also talked on how important it is to work together to safeguard the oceans and exploit ocean resources sustainably for economic development. They emphasized chances for cooperation in other fields of shared interest, such business, investing, innovation, and security and defense. The Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) between Canada and the European Union has strengthened trade between the two nations and opened opportunities for people and businesses on both sides of the Atlantic, and Prime Minister Trudeau expressed his gratitude for Portugal’s resolute and early support for the agreement. 

The Prime Minister and the President emphasized Portugal’s and Canada’s respective participation in the Indo-Pacific, underlining their shared desire to be active and involved partners in the region.
